Electric Car Subscription: Try Life With an EV Without Signing Up for Years

Electric car subscription in the UK compared: what's included, charging costs, insurance, mileage, cancellation and the best EVs to subscribe to.

An electric car subscription lets you drive an EV for a monthly fee, usually with servicing and road tax included but charging left to you, so the real cost depends on where you can plug in.

Buying your first electric car is a leap of faith. Will the range be enough? Where will you charge? Will you miss the petrol station, or quietly enjoy never seeing one again?

A subscription, like short-term electric car hire, lets you answer those questions with real experience, not guesswork. You pay a monthly fee, drive a fully electric car and, depending on the deal, hand it back when you're done. No resale worries. No four-year contract.

But EV subscriptions come with a few wrinkles petrol deals don't: charging costs, range in winter, battery health and return-charge rules. This guide covers the EV side, including how a subscription compares with long-term car rental. For the contract basics that apply to every subscription, such as deposits, credit checks and minimum terms, see our guide to car subscriptions in the UK.

What is an electric car subscription

What Is an Electric Car Subscription?

It's a recurring fee for the use of a fully electric car, under an agreement that sets out the term, mileage allowance and what's included. You never own the car. When the agreement ends, it goes back.

Some EV subscriptions run month to month. Others offer multi-year terms. Don't assume every subscription is short or flexible. The contract decides that, not the label.

EV Subscription vs Leasing vs Monthly Rental

EV subscription EV leasing Monthly EV rental
Commitment One month to several years Usually two to four years Usually weeks to around three months
Upfront cost Fee or deposit, varies Initial rental of several months Deposit or card hold
Insurance Sometimes included Arranged yourself Usually some cover included
Servicing Usually included Varies Usually included
Charging costs Usually yours Yours Yours
Ending early Depends on minimum term Usually costly Depends on tariff

The choice comes down to certainty. If you know you'll want the same EV for years, leasing usually costs less per month. If you're testing the water, a subscription or long-term car rental gives you a way out.

What's Included, and What Isn't

Inclusions vary, so get an itemised list. Common ones are use of the car, servicing, breakdown assistance, road tax and tyres for normal wear. Insurance is sometimes included and sometimes not, so compare the total cost either way. EV insurance can be higher than you'd expect.

Is Charging Included?

Almost never assume it is. Most subscriptions expect you to pay for your own electricity, at home or on the public network. If a charging card is supplied, ask how it's billed and whether there's an admin fee. Be wary of any "all inclusive" deal that doesn't spell out charging.

What an EV Subscription Really Costs

The monthly fee is only half the number. To compare deals properly, add your charging:

  1. Estimate your monthly miles. Be honest, including weekends.
  2. Check the car's efficiency. EVs are usually quoted in miles per kWh. Smaller cars go further on each unit than large SUVs.
  3. Price your charging mix. Home charging on an overnight tariff is usually the cheapest. Public rapid chargers often cost several times more per unit.
  4. Add it to the monthly fee. That total is the figure to compare against a petrol car or another EV.

Two drivers on the same subscription can pay very different amounts each month, depending only on where they charge.

Can You Subscribe Without a Home Charger?

Yes, but think it through first. Home charging is usually the cheapest and easiest option. Without it, you'll rely on:

  • Workplace charging, if your employer offers it
  • Destination charging at supermarkets, gyms or hotels
  • Public rapid chargers, which are quick but often cost much more per mile

Renting your home or living in a flat? You'll usually need permission from your landlord or building management to fit a charger, and installation is rarely part of the subscription. Map your weekly driving against nearby chargers before you commit.

Range and Battery: What to Check

Real-World Range

Official range figures are measured in test conditions. In daily use, and especially in cold weather, you'll usually get noticeably less. Plan around a cautious figure, not the brochure one, and check how far your regular journeys really are.

Battery Health on Used EVs

Some providers offer used EVs on subscription, which can cost less. Batteries lose a little capacity over time, so ask for the model year, the battery version and, if available, a battery health figure for the actual car.

Mileage Allowance

Check the monthly allowance and the excess-mile charge. Some providers start at around 800 miles a month, with higher bands available. Your live quote is what counts.

Contract Checks for an EV Subscription

The contract points are the same as any subscription: minimum term, notice period, deposit or joining fee, credit check, early return rules and car swaps. Our car subscription guide covers each one. Two are worth checking twice for an EV:

  • The exact car: some providers book by vehicle group, so a specific model and battery size isn't guaranteed. If range matters, make sure the agreement names the car.
  • The billing cycle: if you're comparing against a monthly rental, check whether the subscription bills every 28 days, 30 days or calendar month.

Returning the Car

Before you hand it back, check the provider's rules on:

  • Charge level: many expect a minimum percentage
  • Mileage: any excess will be charged
  • Damage: expect an inspection
  • Accessories: return every cable and card
  • Collection: timings and fees

Family, Luxury and Business EV Subscriptions

Family EV subscriptions work well with larger electric SUVs and seven-seaters. Check child seat positions and boot space with everyone aboard.

Luxury EV subscriptions cover performance and premium electric cars. Expect stricter eligibility and higher excesses.

For a business EV subscription, confirm permitted drivers, insurance, invoicing and responsibilities. Speak to your accountant about tax rather than assuming savings.

Plug In, Then Decide

An electric car subscription is one of the easiest ways to find out if EV life suits you. Pick the right car for your journeys, work out what charging will really cost, and read the terms on insurance, mileage and returns. After a few months, you'll know whether you're ready to go electric for good.
